So I am revamping the website, bear with me…I am learning to build a sphere in Photoshop.
So Tingwei is flying back to China. She’ll be missed because she was really dedicated to learning the language. This afternoon I had lunch with her and other classmates at a Bistro between Marienplatz and Sendlinger Tor. Our waiter was noticably friendly, little giggly and little nervous; um, not your typical Munich waiter, ehhem.
Later, we found out that he didn’t speak German very well. He immediately switched to English when he tried to explain that there would be no eggs in the Spaghetti dish when you substitute the white sauce for red. I didn’t recognize his accent but it sounded so familiar. After he served our lunch he asked us if we liked our meal, did we need anything else? Okay he’s american. He must be with this service.
When we wanted to pay…he separated our check, I wanted to drop dead in shock (this is highly unusual behavior. typically the waiter makes up some bs math and you end up pay for the other person’s food from another table.) I asked him where he was from. He said: Florida. Now, that doesn’t get an OMG yet. Which city, I asked? He said: Sarasota…now OMG. Yep, my fellow Sarasotian. Wacky! He’s been in Germany for 13 months and can’t speak a lick of German. I’ve been here for 8 months and whoohoo, I’m reading and speaking in German baby! I felt sorry for him, because I know how hard it is to communicate at his level, but he falls into the English trap. I hope to go back there, the food was great and the service was refreshing.
