Decision Day!Yippee Skippee! I got my Absentee Ballot yesterday in the mail. It’s written in English and Spanish but no..no German? Oh well.
So now I’ve got to get on the up and up. Katherine Harris or Bill Nelson for U.S. Senate? I’m not a fan of Harris’s political positions and I don’t like Nelson’s position on using so-called permissible interrogation techniques to obtain information from detainees. But what is cool is that he was an astronaut on Space Shuttle Columbia in ’86, now that’s moxie.
As for the other candidates, Floyd Frazier wants to legalize Mary. Belinda Noah, who was going to run in the Rep. primary but opted for No Party Affiliation, is for protecting victim’s rights. Brian Moore is against the U.S. occupation of Iraq. Roy Tanner is for doing it all -with his long focus list if you send him to D.C.
Now for the guber vote, so who’s gonna be the 44th Governor? Looks like it’s a race between Jim Davis and Charlie Crist. I can’t find any info on the other guys. As for as healthcare, Davis wants to increase funding for children’s healthcare, while Crist wants to require prescription drugs to be tracked (manufacturer -> pharmacy) to ensure drug safety. One interesting pronouncement from Crist is to allow homeowners to move within the same county and between different counties while maintaining their previous property tax level. That could significantly help people in this ever changing market move closer to jobs.
There are also six proposed Florida constitutional amendments. I guess if cigarette manufacturers spent $8.24 billion on advertising and promotion in 1999, maybe $57 million for the comprehensive Statewide Tobacco Education and Prevention Program in Florida isn’t so bad. But is it worth reducing the funding to existing government programs? Well, you can read about the rest here at Vote Smart Florida. They have an official ballot summary, the amendment type and their financial impact, plus a list of proponents and opponents or arguments for and against. All in all, these are some exciting times. But just one thing was missing in my big envelope, where’s my sticker?! I don’t think the lady at the post office has ‘em.

Good Girl! (That you voted!) It’s so important!
Harris? She’s crazy. Really, she acts a little nutty. Even Republicans don’t support her.
Moving btw counties without losing your Homestead? That would have been nice for Paul and me…
Eg, let’s say Paul bought his house in 1975 for $50k. Property taxes for Pinellas County may have been set to 15% of the house value.
As the years go by, this % may increase. The house value will also go up, but b/c of Save Our Homes, it will go up a small bit.
Fast forward to 2005. Property taxes are now equal to 20% appraised home value. Even though all the homes are selling for $200k due to the real estate bubble, we’re still only paying taxes based on, say 20% of $80k (increased a little from $50k).
But if we sell our house for $200k, the new owners will have to pay 20% of $200k.
Down here in Broward, property taxes = 25% of value. Cheapest townhouse we could find was $200k. Annual taxes = $5,000! (Whereas we were use to paying $1600 annually)!
Paul’s parents bought their waterfront home in the 70′s for $100k. Their prorperty takes now are based on say $150k. If they were to sell their house now (worth $700k+) the new owners would hav to pay 20%*$700k! (Unless Charlie Crist changes the law).
Sorry soooo long.
not at all Pinger! That’s some great info!
Wow… you did good thing me thinks by casting a vote
When it comes to those things… this is me –> :dunce:
But then again, there aren’t any Chihuahuas running for spots
