I had lunch today with Alex’s mom. She introduced me to pickled herring smothered in sour cream. I’ve been reluctant to eat it because.. well I don’t really know why. Afterall, I like to try different things. We had it with boiled potatoes. And so..yeah, it’s yummy. I want to stress that I liked it. Probably too fishy for most seafood light-weights. I know Janny, had a jar of this stuff in Florida when we roomed together, so this north German delicacy is not unknown to the U.S. So maybe some of you know the drawback to pickled herring.
The only downside to this meal is burping up pickled herring breath for hours after the meal. Yuck. It’s worse than beer and radish burp breath.

Mmmmm, pickled herring in sour cream! I also like the pickled herring, sour cream and beet mixture. Yum!
so,,, what was it like? served cold or hot? texture? sour? fried after the pickling?
@Pinger: pickled herring we had was served cold but over warm potatoes. the herring isn’t cooked, its prepared more like Ceviche, then smothered in a sour cream sauce that has strips of pickles and dill.
it reminded me of a large sardine in texture, minus any bones.
Pickled Herring is really nice
The Dutch make a really nice salad out of pickled herring, sour cream, beets and Granny Smith apples. It’s DELICIOUS!
But I’m with you– the burps afterwards are a killer!
