It was only until recently that I moved a bulk of photos from our camera to my hard drive. Very risky to let it go so long, I know. Having been throwing myself in all the things I felt I needed to accomplish this year combined with the feeling that I achieved only an eighth of it to my satisfaction, I was shocked by how much Alex and I actually made happen in 2011.

Although every particle of my being was occupied with moments I enjoyed doing, I couldn’t help but feel less than content. Maybe it was my self-inflicted pressure about my first job in Germany? Maybe it was the unknowns of creating an ever-growing music Verein with my closest and most-trusted friends? Maybe it was age forcing me to re-evaluating a few personal theses I developed when I was 25-27 years old? Who knows. Looking back, 2011 has been continuous warp-speed, hair-bending transition. For 2012, my hope is for some balance and a bit o’ mirth.

Where my path in this book of time will take me, I’m curious to see. The story lately flutters with a less adventurousness vibe as in previous years, I must admit. I’m hoping to shake this haziness in me, learn to ask people for help and of course, let opportunity and purpose be my guide to happiness.

As for the Artist, his name is Arnold Odermatt, a retired Swiss policeman whose job it was to photograph accident scenes.

Odermatt was the first officer in Switzerland to begin documenting these tragic scenes on film. According to the Record: “Setting his tripod on the roof of a police van, he first shot a series of straightforward images to accompany accident reports and on-site police drawings.

Hours later, when onlookers had gone and most traces of violence had been cleared away, he returned to make a final, more highly aestheticized portrait of the wrecked vehicles.”
